There is this common and silly idea about Thailand that tourists go there on holidays for 3 main reasons : the beautiful beaches, the amazing food, and sex tourism. Guys, stop right there ! While it’s true that the food is incredibly flavorful just about everywhere in the country, yes you CAN also go on holidays in this country and not experience neither the sex nor the paradise beaches, and still have a great time if you give yourself a chance to explore further !
My hubby and I went to Pattaya (the saint city of sexy shows) in 2013. Let’s be honest, the local beach is nothing like postcards showing clear blue waters, and the sex industry is everywhere in the city center. However, we were able to have an amazing 10 days Holiday, doing what most foreign tourists don’t do in Pattaya : visiting the city and the touristic sites that the Thai people themselves enjoy when they visit the area, away from the seaside and away from the big classic attractions.
We like smaller attractions indeed, because even though we need to drive a bit outside of the city, it is less crowded and you can have more personal space on the sites. For that matter, I highly recommend a half day at the Pattaya Exotic Botanic Garden ! It’s big, it’s green, it’s clean and tidy, it’s full of plant sculptures, and you can even ride elephants if you like ! And unlike other places, it’s kinda quiet and perfect to relax !
There are several sections in the park, that you can easily join by walking on paths or bridges. If most of the plants are Asian or from South-East Asia and Pacific area, the sections also are organized by types and origines of garden styles, that’s why you can find for example French style gardens or other European style gardens.
There are real beauties to look at basically everywhere in the park. At different times of the day, there are elephant shows that are organized (you need to buy an extra ticket though), as well as elephant rides (it’s okay, but if you have a chance to ride an elephant at the Pattaya Elephant Village, it is much more worth it and fun to be in nature and ride across the river !).
Note that the Pattaya Exotic Botanic Garden is the largest botanic garden of all South-East Asia Pacific !! Don’t miss it !
Before you go, did you know my first cookbook got published? It’s called Cookbook #1: A French Girl’s Cooking Adventures in Her Kitchen, and it’s available online, you’re just a click away, RIGHT HERE!
